Our Horses

February's Dawn - I am a dunn Quarter Horse mare and have lived at Bakas since I was six years old. I enjoy carrying my riders in many disciplines, including western and english and my newest challenge, dressage. Horse shows are fun for me and I usually help my Bakas riders with the Challenge Show and Area and State Special Olympics each year. The riders at Bakas call me "Dawn the Beautiful".

GiGi - I'm in my early, early 20's & not so old myself (if you ask me). In fact, I have overheard from the Bakas Staff, Riders, & Volunteers that I am the most reliable horse at Bakas. It is flattering that so many of the riders here trust me to carry them through the day. If you really love me though, don't forget to add a carrot (or two) to my feed bucket!

Scruffy - Don’t let my name fool you.  My impressive name is ‘Louisville Lad’.  It seems the staff felt ‘Scruffy’ was much more fitting because I love a good scrub, in the mud bath that is!!  I am an Arabian gelding.  Most of my day is spent helping riders find balance and confidence.  In this picture my friend, Kelly (aka, Dorothy) helps me, the Cowardly Lion, find confidence at the Horse Sponsorship Auction!

Dolly -   I'm a Thoroughbred/Clydesdale cross. I am a large, stout mare and the Staff frequently use me to Backride. Backriding involves me carrying a staff member as well as a Bakas rider with low muscle tone. I am happy to give riders a chance to ride who may not have the opportunity to ride otherwise. I also enjoy equitation classes at the Challenge Show and Special Olympics. People tend to be attracted to me and say I look like the horses at Busch Gardens with my striking markings and fluffy legs.

Little John - It's funny my name is "Little John" because I am the largest horse at Bakas. I am a 17 hand Belgian draft horse and weigh over 2000 pounds. My size may seem intimidating, but I really am a gentle giant. I pull a carriage that is specially equipped to hydraulically lift and hold wheelchairs. I have even given some bare back rides --- they can't seem to find a saddle to fit me!

Johnnie Jet - I may have a boyish name, but I am very much a lady. I am a paint mare and came to Bakas after being a broodmare for some time. I was happy to come to Bakas since now I get to have "human kids" who are lot easier to take care of than "horsey kids". I really enjoy being with my riders in classes and enjoy helping win medals and ribbons at competitions.

Sequoia - I am a sorrel Quarter Horse gelding and moved to Bakas in the summer of 2001. I have been used in english, western and speed events at Bakas. I even having some jumping under my belt -- but I wasn't too fond of all that work. My favorite activity is carrying my riders and winning at competitions. I am also a chronic prankster and have been nicknamed the Bakas "Joker"!

Zander - I am a 16.2 hand Hannoverian gelding and have been at Bakas since they moved from their old Dale Mabry home. I was previously used for jumping and shows -- but now enjoy a slower pace of english equitation and even western pleasure! I am quite a handsome guy and hope to get to try some dressage with my riders as well.

Fresca - I am a gray Quarter Horse mare and enjoy helping riders at Bakas. I am used for english, western, and trail obstacles. I am also used to help independent riders learn walking and trotting. I am a sweet natured, stout mare and help all types of riders at Bakas -- children and adults.

Thank you to Fresca’s winner of the 2006 Horse Sponsorship Auction, Hannah Allred & Family

Mattie - I am a 14.3 hand paint mare. I have a smaller frame and mostly children and some adults ride me. My way of going is very smooth and I help riders learn to walk, trot and canter. I can go english or western although I prefer to go slooooooow. Many people are attracted to me -- my colors are quite flashy.

Jack - I’m the newest member of the Bakas family.  I am a handsome bay Quarter type pony gelding.  I enjoy spending my off days relaxing with my buddies Sequoia and Zander.  I also enjoy my new lifestyle helping riders in classes.  The humans here have some interesting activities in the arena and on the trails.  I look forward to many fun years here at Bakas.

Sweetie - I show my sweetest side when I am with my human friends.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy my horse pals too, but I like to boss them around a bit so I am sure to get the best hay and grass!  I am a Quarter Horse mare and have been at Bakas since 2005.
